Algeria, 1914. Yacine is chosen by Gaïd Brahim, who rules the region, to go and fight in France instead of his son. In exchange, he promises him a farm, money and a wife. But after four terrible years at the front, Yacine realizes he's been duped. To escape Gaïd, who wants to murder him, the young man flees and begins a cross-country journey.
